Just like riding a bike…
Yesterday i gave Nick another motorbike riding lesson. Its actually quite fun, i get to ride his bike to a deserted car park where he then gets on and has a go. I forgot how much i miss riding a motorbike.
Its surprisingly hard teaching someone how to ride a motorbike. I thought about it and I cant really remember being taught to ride a bike. For as long as i remember we always had some kind of motorbike and the large paddock out the back of my parents place made it the ideal place to ride.
Actually thinking about teaching someone never really crossed my mind till Nick asked me for some adivce. How do you tell someone when the right time is to change gears? For me i just kind of know when the engine starts to rev out too much. The same goes for changing down a gear, how do you explain to someone the right amount of revs to give the bike in order for it not to jolt and over rev?
Its kinda tough. Im not sure how good of a teacher i am but its fun.
Nick is improving though, wont be long and he will be crusing around Rocky
Well, it’s fun for me, I just worry that you’ll get bored standing around watching me wobble back and forth!
I think people coming from a dirt-bike background would have a smoother time of it, since they’d already have a good intuitive understanding of how the bike responds to your movements. I think it’d be great to be able to throw an indestructible dirt bike around so that you’d know from experience what the limits of a bike feel like, even if it is on a different type of surface.
On my road bike, I think I’ll be too afraid of crashing (and damaging myself or the bike), to get a feel for what’s safe and what’s not.
Anyway, it’s early days!
Thankyou Brett-Sensei!
