Federal Budget

Well, the Australian federal budget was announced on Tuesday. I usually don’t pay much attention to it but one item mentioned in an [article](http://apcmag.com/6069/bland_budget_for_broadband_battlers) on the [apcmag.com](http://www.apcmag.com) website made me wonder.

>Barring the somewhat anticipated expansion of subsidies for solar power installations, the most technologically complex development in the entire budget seemed to be $20 million for an Australian Taxation Office software development project. For the 50% odd of Australians who already file electronically, the ATO will now offer pre-filled returns, complete with salary, benefit and health insurance information. Handy if you’re a standard salary earner, but hardly an earth-shattering development

$20 million for an Australian Taxation Office software development project that will offer pre-filled tax returns. $20 million dollars…. are they kidding?

The Australian Taxation Office has offered electronic returns for a few years now. It works really well under Windows but their solution for Mac users is to run it under Virtual PC. Considering the amount of cross platform solutions that are available these days, I find it extremely hard to swallow that they cannot offer a Mac native way of doing a tax return without having to use some kind of emulation / virtualisation solution.

I hope some of this $20 million will be used to address the current terrible solution for filing a tax return electronically. Changes are though that this $20 million project will be developed and released only to support Windows users.

I always do the survey each year after filing taxes about how useful (useless) the online system is for mac users. I always write constructive feedback about the many cross platform solutions that could be used to make the system useable for people on any computing platform. Who knows who actually gets the feedback and whether it’s actually read / passed on.

It’s a joke.

Young Australian of the Year?

From [Hage-Ali gives up young Australian title](http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/story/0,20867,20926445-2702,00.html):
> IKTIMAL Hage-Ali has relinquished the title of NSW Young Australian of the Year following controversy surrounding her arrest over an alleged cocaine supply ring.

>Ms Hage-Ali, 22, who is a member of Prime Minister John Howard’s Muslim community Reference Group, was questioned and released last month by Middle Eastern Organised Crime Squad detectives investigating an alleged cocaine supply ring.

I wonder what the original criteria are for selection as ‘NSW young Australian of the year’ ?

Equal Opportuinty for the Disabled

So ive been in Hobart the last few days. Each day we get a local newspaper delivered to our door so of course ive been reading it to catch up on some local news.

Was an interesting article on the front page of todays paper titled “Sex Trips: Public servants escort disabled to brothels”.

From the article:

“Intellectually disabled men are being taken on organised trips to Hobart brothels by heath workers. Under official guidelines, Department of Health and Human Services workers have official permission to arrange visits to sex workers for their clients”

Not sure how i feel about this issue. Struck me as kinda funny being pasted on the front page of the local Hobart newspaper, but i guess it all comes down to equal opportunity for the disabled. *shrugs*

Through the wonder of the internet, the article is actually online :D

So go here and read for yourself, and post your comments below so my blog looks cool with lots of comments :P

News Sites

Theres lots of cool sounding news over at the Sydney Morning Herald. I say ‘cool sounding’ because i cant actually read the articles becuase it wants me to register. :|

I hate that, The articles are freely available, but you have to signup to view them. Apart from it sounding like a massive scheme to get email addresses for advertising, its also a pain having to register and sign in for multiple sites that you read.

I dont see what the point is. All it does is stop me from reading the site. It also stops me linking to cool stuff as noone else will be able to read the article unless they register as well. *sigh*

Time to find another Australian online newspaper. *shrugs*

Daily Reads

Whilst reading the daily rss blog and news feeds i subscribe to, i stumbled across 2 items which i thought were worth mentioning.

I dont usually blog about news or current event type things, in most cases they are done to death. This time however ill make an exception.

First things first was this article from businessweek. Its an interview with Bill Gates about some new things Microsoft are releasing soon. Mr Gates (or Bill as i like to call him :P ), makes a comment about how people do want to watch movies on small screens.

But Gates points to the growing phenomenon of kids watching videos during long car trips as proof that there is a market for small screens. “I guess Steve’s kids just listen to Bach and Mozart,” Gates quips. “But mine, they want to watch Finding Nemo. I don’t know who made that, but it’s a really neat movie.”

To start with, when i was a kid i was too busy looking out the window to ever be bothered wanting to watch a movie. On top of that, most of the time if i tried to read or do aything like that i would enter into my ‘dry heaving, hurling’ state.
I cant see a need for car video players, maybe if the parents want somthing to shut the kid up for a few hours or something, i dunno.

Something else i thought was funny was his statement about Finding Nemo. Now am i the only one who thinks that Steve read this and had a big grin on his face? I can just picture Bill Gates taking his kids shopping and they run into the Disney store grabbing Finding Nemo toys and asking to buy them. On the way home they stop by a dvd shop and pick up a few copies of Finding Nemo. :P

I think Steve is on the right track (as usual) by saying that people dont want to watch video on small screens. There have been portable DVD players with small screens on the market for a while now, yet i have only ever seen one once when i went to america and some guy had one on the plane. He watched a 3 hours movie and the battery was dead so it them turned into a paperweight.

What would be the point of having a portable video device? I dont think you could even compare it to something like the iPod. People use the iPod while they are working or walking or excerising etc. If your going to watch a movie you have to sit and concentrate on it, which kinda makes it only really good for long trips. I guess whatever it takes to stop the kids from howling in the back seat.

So ill wait and see how these ‘Microsoft software’ powered portable video players go, i cant se them having much effect on iPod sales at all. *sigh* Maybe Bill will just make them and give them to his windows service pack team in the hope that they can get Service Pack 2 up to scratch so its at least useable.

Moving right along. In other news, i stumbled across this article from the Guardian. Its about the undrground caverns below Paris and how the members of the police force have found a fully equiped cinema and restaurant in one of the caverns!

Police in Paris have discovered a fully equipped cinema-cum-restaurant in a large and previously uncharted cavern underneath the capital’s chic 16th arrondissement.

Officers admit they are at a loss to know who built or used one of Paris’s most intriguing recent discoveries.

“We have no idea whatsoever,” a police spokesman said.

I actually read this article twice, cause i thought it was really cool. It goes on to mention the elaborate setup they had including closed circuit security system, power and telephone facilities, cooking facilities and more. It even says that when the police returned with members of the cities electricty board, the poweer had been cut and a message was left saying “Do not try to find us”

How cool is that?! There are secret societies using the caverns underneath Paris for holding secrets meetings, sounds rally cool to me.

The coolest part is the closing quote

Patrick Alk, a photographer who has published a book on the urban underground exploration movement and claims to be close to the group, told RTL radio the cavern’s discovery was “a shame, but not the end of the world”. There were “a dozen more where that one came from,” he said.

“You guys have no idea what’s down there.”

*Ponders what really could be down there*

Music? :|

The whole music industry is going crazy from all those popstars, american idol type shows… they are making people who cant sing think they have a hope of getting a record deal.. and this doesnt help:

williamhung

If you have itunes installed go and listen to the previews of his songs here:
itunes music store

To be honest – he sounds terrible… theres no easier way to say it, and i think the fact that he does sound terible is what will make people buy this (or download it somewhere)

I guess it comes back to ‘rooting for the underdog’, even if the underdog actually does sing like a howling dog. :|

After saying all that i will probably download his songs somewhere, mainly cause i find it damn funny – im always up for a good laugh.

Passion of the Christ

Dunno if this rates as current affairs – but since it was on the tv show ‘A Current Affair’ last night im putting in that category :P

Seems people are dieing from watching the new mel gibson movie “The Passion of the Christ”.
A quote from this article says:

A woman died of an apparent heart attack Wednesday while watching the climactic crucifixion scene in “The Passion of the Christ” at a morning showing in Wichita, Kansas

I also read that there was other people who had suffered heart attaacks from watching the same movie / scene. It seems to be getting a lot of media coverage which can only mean it has to be at least half decent.

I guess ill go along and watch sometime and see for myself – hope my heart is strong enough :P

Only in America?

Got a few pictures for ya…

redfern01

redfern02

Righto, looking at this id swear they where taken in America somewhere. Like LA or somthing, but guess what? They where taken right here in Australia, Redfern in Sydney to be exact.

A young aboriginal boy died after falling off his bike and being impailed on a fence. The riot was caused due to rumours that police had actually chased the boy and pretty much caused him to fall off and get hurt.
The police deny chasing him, but were there when it happened to get the boy off the fence and help to try to revive him.

Now im not sure exactly what happened or why, but i find it hard to believe that starting a riot is the answer. Apparently around 3 million dollars in damages was caused to the Redfern train station, and around 44 police where seriously injured after getting pelted with stones and fire bombs and fireworks.

I think this is nuts. Who do they think they are that they can just go out and cause this much damage. Im not saying that the police didnt chase the boy, maybe they did, who knows, but doing stupid stuff like that is just crazy and does nothing.

bleh… it annoys me.

anyway, theres lots of info on the web at the Sydney Morning Herald website.

Police Injuries: figure revised to 40

Police accused of intimidation

Police ‘deserve all they get’: ded teens mum

Thats just a selection if you want a read.

grrrr annoying…
